For most of us growing up, we were taught just one thing — study hard, get good marks, become a topper, and life will be easy. A good job? Definitely. Great opportunities? Of course. Success? Guaranteed. But as we get older, reality hits hard. The world has changed. Good marks look nice on paper, but it’s your skills that actually decide whether you get an opportunity or not.

Recently, Bisma, a first-year English (Hons) student from Delhi University’s Hansraj College, shared a very honest post on LinkedIn that went viral. Even though she is a topper with more than 50 certificates, 10 medals, and 10 trophies, she has not been able to get even one internship.
“I am a topper, but I cannot get an internship,” she wrote in her post.
She explained that in almost every interview she gave, no one asked her about her marks. Instead, they asked, “What skills do you have?” She said, “But I wasn’t ready for that question! My professors, teachers, and family members always told me to focus only on studies. They said studies will give me success, not anything else.”
Now, when she faces the real world, she sees that the job market works differently.
“Companies are not looking for toppers who just know how to memorize things. They want people who have skills and also decent marks,” she wrote.
Bisma is not telling students to stop studying or throw away their books. Her message is clear — learn a skill, practice it well, and master it. That’s how you will find good opportunities.

In a world where most people care a lot about marks and ranks, Bisma’s words are a strong reminder. Because the truth is, marks can open a door, but it’s your skills that will actually help you get a seat at the table.
